It's up to us to make our lives happy. Only the self can make it happy or sad. I also agree with you that what you do in life makes a big difference in your outlook of what makes you feel happy of sad. Helping others to see this is another avenue of seeking the happiness. Isn't it strange that we have to have a comparison for us to identify our emotions well? We can settle into a life without much contrast without realizing it until something comes along which forces us to realize what we've been accepting.
